Post Carbon Institute is a small but highly influential sustainability think tank that provides individuals and communities with the resources needed to understand and respond to the interrelated ecological, economic, energy, and equity crises of the 21st century. We’re looking for someone with the unique combination of experience, subject matter expertise, passion, and personality to lead the organization’s various communications, marketing, outreach, and audience growth efforts.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Marketing & Communications Director will be responsible for four primary areas of focus: overall communications strategy and management; product development and promotion; social media engagement; and traditional media engagement.

Overall Strategy & Management

  • Evaluating existing organizational outreach & communications strategies and identifying opportunities for growth and/or streamlining.
  • Developing a marketing strategy that effectively promotes the organization, educates the public about the issues, and maximizes the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Ensuring consistency and quality of all outreach and communications, including graphic identity and narrative tone.
  • Participating in key strategic decision-making and dialogue within the organization.
  • Managing communications calendar and oversee day-to-day execution of all outgoing communications.
  • Ensuring all general inquiries the organization receives via email, web form comments, phone, and social media are handled promptly and appropriately.
  • Staying current with the issues that PCI addresses and the work of key partners.
  • Overseeing execution of resilience.org growth strategy.

Product Development & Promotion

  • Supporting the successful distribution and promotion of PCI’s products through development of promotional materials, outreach to targeted allies/organizations, social media and email communications, traditional media outreach, and engagement with partners.
  • Ensuring that all products meet high standards for visual design and are consistent with the organization’s identity and style.
  • Overseeing design and development of multimedia presentations, videos, and animations.
  • Overseeing maintenance and updating of the organization’s various websites.

Social Media Engagement

  • Managing external communications across social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
  • Actively seek opportunities for engagement across other platforms as they emerge.
  • Growing our social media following through partnerships and creative communications.
  • Evaluating reach/effectiveness of social media engagement and developing strategies to improve.

Traditional Media Engagement

  • Managing and quickly responding to media inquiries, including vetting of requests, facilitating appropriate connections between journalists and PCI Fellows and staff, and follow-up.
  • Cultivating ongoing relationships with the media and managing media outreach for PCI products, including conducting press releases and media briefings.

Skills & Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in for-profit or nonprofit communications, marketing, and/or public relations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Excellent project management skills. Proven ability to organize and prioritize work to meet tight, concurrent deadlines.
  • Strong design aesthetic and ability to create visual materials for websites, email campaigns, and social media.
  • A self-starter who takes initiative in resolving problems, developing and implementing solutions, and seeking input.
  • Comfortable working both independently and in close collaboration with other staff members—both in person and remotely.
  • An editorial and communication style that meets high standards of design and tone, and is consistent with the Post Carbon Institute identity, mission, and voice.
  • Proven experience working with digital communications, including email campaigns and social media.
  • Previous experience with website content management; understanding of email marketing systems preferred.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with and passion for the sustainability issues addressed by PCI and/or audiences central to PCI’s outreach efforts.
  • Preferred: Experience using Photoshop or similar image-editing software.
  • Preferred: A strong sense of humor.

Details

Location: Strong preference for candidates in Corvallis, Oregon or the Portland, Oregon metro area. However, consideration will be given to exceptional candidates not located in this area.
Employment Type: Full-time.
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.
